Hill's short fiction is always engrossing - much more than the Simon Seraillier books - and with a short page count, the mood and atmosphere in The Small Hand is crafted with considerable skill. It has a throwback to older times in the way the story is told, and if the plot, ultimately, is a bit easy to predict towards the end, it doesn't really detract from the craft of the book.
